Ocean to Ocean in a T

The Centennial of the 1909 Ocean to Ocean Endurance Contest

This is where I will be making daily Blogs about the trip each day. Enjoy, Thanks, Jon

Forty years ago I was introduced to the wonderful world of Model T's by Ballard Phleager of Salem, Virginia. I was a freshman at Roanoke College. I came out of the local pharmacy and spotted a 1920 Model T touring owned by Ballard. The T was Ballard's everyday driver. Ballard and I became very good friends. Everyday after class I would go to his little back alley garage and help him rebuild Model T's. The first engine I ever helped him build was a Fronty. On special days we would pack a lunch and take off in Ballards T and visit friends in the country. It wasn't a surprise that all these guys owned Model T's.

My first T was a 1920 Depot hack that I started gathering parts for as soon as I got out of College. She was alot of fun drove her everywhere. We also had a 26 touring and a 25 roadster. I also built the yellow speedster seen in my member page. On September 28, 2001 I had to sell my touring and roadster to buy my 1911 Torpedo roadster. Boy was it worth it. Torpedo's drive like nothing else. After years of work (with the help of Alan Buckner) and over 4000 hours of research and restoration she became a beautiful show car.

I have always had the bug to tour and do the Great race. In 1984 when it was the 75th year celebration, I was to involved with my children to go. October of 2004 I bought a 1920 Coupe from Willard Revaz to do this tour. These last two years we have spent going through the car and rebuilding her for this 4000 mile trip. She is ready and so am I for the trip of a life time. My wife, bless her heart, has heard me breath, eat, sleep this trip for the last 5 years!
